Ogrest: Birth of a Walking Catastrophe

$

0

As surprising as it might seem, Ogrest hasn't always been the irascible giant the Twelvians know today. Just like you, the ogre was once small, fragile, and innocent. A creature that was just a tad clumsy, certainly, but with a heart as big as the Krosmoz. Discover the story of this inadvertent "monster"…

Ogrest is to alchemy what the tarte Tatin is to desserts: a mistake, which turned into something marvelous! At least that's how it was, and still is, recounted by his creator: Otomai, the greatest alchemist in the World of Twelve.

It was in his laboratory, perched at the very top of the Tree Keeholo in the middle of Canopy Village, that Ogrest came to be. Grabbing the wrong phial, accidentally dropping a flask, or dropping brushes into potions: it can even happen to the best! And that's how Ogrest, a creature of muscle and… well, more muscles, was born. It must be admitted that it's pretty rare to have Ogrines, an ultra-concentrated form of Wakfu, running through your veins.

Otomai quickly realizes that the little ogre doesn't do things half-heartedly. Not only does he possess a dimensional stomach, which gives him an insatiable hunger, but even the littlest of his tears can, by itself, cause a gigantic tidal wave! Those two little details required extra attention and vigilance from his "Papa"…

Beauty and the Beastly

Despite all the love given him by Otomai and the two assistants, Stone and Rochette, the days were long, and loneliness began to plague the little creature's life. Until the day that Stone introduced him to Dathura, a doll that was plunged into a deep sleep ever since her heart, also made of Ogrine, was broken.

Ogrest didn't need more than a couple seconds to fall in love. From misadventures to blunders, it was finally thanks to his tears with extraordinary powers that her heart started beating again.

Ogrest's Love

A perfect, and not to mention divine, romance had started. Underneath that mass of biceps and flesh, little Ogrest was hiding a big heart. But the doll always wanted more and taking human form became her priority. She knew: Ogrest was ready to do anything to make his beloved happy. Not being in the habit of doing anything halfway, Ogrest got it in his head to do the impossible: to reunite the precious 6 Primordial Dofus to help Dathura realize her dearest wish. But the Ogrine flowing through his veins didn't mix well with the powerful dragon eggs. So much so that the twelve gods themselves were disconcerted and couldn't manage to control the "beast"!

In trying to do good, Ogrest did the worst thing: he scared Dathura who then disappeared into the abysses of time…

From Love, Chaos

Love stories generally don't end well. At least that's what most Twelvians will tell you. Beside himself with grief, the ogre ran to hide on the highest peak in the World of Twelve: Mount Zinit. There, hidden from view, he lets his tears flow and flow, and after just a few minutes, the World of Twelve transformed into a giant swimming pool!

Ogrest's Chaos

It was a veritable deluge which would completely devastate the world's ecosystem, and lots of adventurers lost their lives. Most of the few survivors were traumatized forever. But there were some among them who were still belligerent enough to decide to do the unthinkable: go give that whiny ogre a good lesson!

Ogrest is waiting for you!

Interview - Brise-Stasis, FX Designer

$

He's the guy responsible for WAKFU's special effects, or FX as they're sometimes known: "Rain, sunshine, spells... Basically anything that shines and gives off light..."  Interview with Bastien, aka Brise-Stasis, who's currently pulling his hair out over Ogrest's FX!

Trained in 2D and 3D graphics and animation, Brise-Stasis joined Ankama in February 2012, where he very quickly learned FX design on the fly: "There was no specific training and besides, here, we work with an internal tool. I was simply told how the program works... two months before the official release! It was difficult to get the hang of it. What's more, I've since tried to train someone else on the tool who could replace me if needed... and he doesn't want to hear another word about it!"

Huppermage spell research

What have you worked on at Ankama?

Brise-Stasis: I mainly work on WAKFU's FX design but, over the last two years, I've also worked on the MMO's animation, alongside the other animators. In the meantime, I've taken part in the research for Krosmaga's FX, and I helped out on the DOFUS film: I annoyed so many people over the stadium scene.

How does your work impact players?

Brise-Stasis: Basically, if a player gets hit, I'm the one who makes sure they know about it. If Ogrest unleashes a cyclone spell, it has to look like your computer's going to be blown away, too. Without FX, this wouldn't happen. We also use it to create a particular ambiance, for example, in the cemetery.

Is it cold here or is it just me?

Who determines the FX requirements and their appearance?
Brise-Stasis: The game designers draw up a document that tells us the spell's range, its area of effect, the element, the boost, the penalty, etc. Based on all this information, I decide what it will look like. I do discuss with the game designers and animators first, though, to find out if they have a particular idea in mind. Then, I get cooking.

From concept..
...to reality!
Stasis spell research
Stasis explosion!

For example, I was asked to make a tsunami at Zinit's summit for Ogrest. But where does it come from, at a 2,000 meter altitude?! I've been working on it all morning. I'm testing a lot of ideas, which either don't work or aren't technically feasible... As a result, a lot of it ends up in the bin!

While we're on the subject of Ogrest... Does he take a lot of work?

Brise-Stasis: For a boss or monster, you have to create, on average, between ten and forty FX. But Ogrest is a special case. He's not one of those arthritic little ultimate bosses who hangs around outside his lair. It's OGREST! It's 6 meters and 500 tons of muscle powered by 6 Dofus who decorates his door steps with the weapons of the gods. A colossal boss needs colossal FX. So yes, the workload is about as huge as he is!

Pets are "Bonus-ing" Back

It's grooming time for your pets! With their coats shining and feathers rippling in the wind, they strut around while flaunting their new tougher bonuses, and [Dy7] explains why.

A few weeks ago, the more curious among you noticed the arrival of the pets from DOFUS Pets in the encyclopedia, and the first pets in the game… But you were quite surprised to see them with such strong bonuses – much stronger than those of the other pets.

It was actually part of a project that we have started for all pets – starting with those from DOFUS Pets – which consists of reviewing all their bonuses in order to give them a much greater impact. Indeed, over the years, WAKFU's pets had lost their luster, with bonuses that are practically anecdotal these days. We decided to bring them up to date!

Obviously, the nature of your pets won't change. If you had one that gave resistance, it will still give resistance. In such a way as to provide as many viable options as possible, you'll also notice that certain pets have come out better off than others: this is quite normal and intentional.

It's been rumored that the Sadida Kingdom will be facing some tough times in Season 3 of the WAKFU animated series, coming very soon to a TV screen near you. Show your support by wearing the most iconic outfit of all: the King of the Forest costume!

To get it, there's no need to go running off every which way… The two ways we've come up with are more than sufficient!

  •  ONE WAY: Get it as a bonus gift when you buy a pack of at least 11,000 OG*.
  •  ANOTHER WAY: Take advantage of the flash sale in the Shop and pick it up for 3,000 OG.

Starting to hear the call of the forest yet? Ready to branch out with a heroic new look? Well then, chop chop! Pick up this costume before it's gone! It's available from now until Friday, September 1st 11:45 PM CEST.

FAQs:

  • The costume is unlinked.

While Ogrest does have an obnoxious tendency to dominate center stage, he's not the only guest in Update 1.55 – far from it. Sure, he may be the main course. But the side dishes are nothing to sneeze at either: rebalancing, redesigns, rewards, and interfaces… There's no shortage of new features to sink your teeth into!

For the complete menu with all the juicy details, check out the changelog!

But if you're really starving for a taste, here's a little appetizer

  • Pet redesign
  • New interface for professions
  • Fusion of the three Weapons Master professions
  • New rewards in end-of-season chests
  • Redesign of the Riktus, Crackler, and Field Plants families
  • A new spell mechanic that the Srams are going to love…

All in all, it should be enough to keep you busy until your next trip up Mount Zinit!

Welcome to the new update!
